Sanoma has today published its Annual Report 2025, including the Sustainability Statement. This article summarises some of Sanoma’s sustainability highlights in 2025.

European Teacher Survey results: Sanoma’s learning materials continue to support teachers in reaching curriculum objectives

Sanoma Learning is a leading European K12 learning company, serving millions of students across Europe. In 2025, 84 % (2024: 84 %) of teachers agreed that Sanoma’s learning materials help students reach curriculum objectives. The annual European Teacher Survey was carried out by Sanoma Learning in 14 countries, with a record-breaking 20,000 teachers assessing student engagement, learning outcomes and teacher efficiency.

In 2025, Sanoma Learning also published its Accessibility Guidelines to ensure that digital learning products are usable for every student.

Climate strategy: Significant emission reductions throughout the business, followed by CDP’s A List status

In 2025, Sanoma was recognised on CDP’s Climate A List, the global gold standard for corporate climate transparency and action. This recognition by CDP, the leading environmental disclosure non-profit, honours companies that take significant action to cut emissions and manage climate risks. Sanoma’s inclusion on the A List reflects the company’s strong climate governance and significant emission reductions.

Sanoma’s climate goals are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and aligned with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement. By the end of 2025, Sanoma had achieved a 59 % (2024: 44 %) reduction in its own operations (Scope 1 and 2) emissions and a 46 % (2024: 38 %) reduction in Scope 3 value chain emissions compared to 2021. Sanoma achieved its 2030 climate targets already in 2024 and exceeded them in 2025.

Advancing employee Diversity, Equality & Inclusion (DE&I) and gender balance

Sanoma’s strategic ambition is to create a culture of inclusion, involving, accepting, and valuing all people in the workplace regardless of their differences and social identity. To ensure that employees across all 11 countries feel that Sanoma provides equal opportunities, the company tracks the Equal Opportunities Score in the annual Employee Engagement Survey. In 2025, the score was 75% (scale 0–100%), with the long‑term target being  above 77%.

Sanoma promotes diversity and gender neutrality throughout the business and aims for a 50/50 gender balance in managerial positions by 2030. In 2025, the share of women among managers with subordinates was 52% (2024: 50%) and among directors or senior managers 46% (2024: 48%). Although the gender diversity ratio is on a good level, Sanoma recognises the need to continue developing it further.

Responsible and ethical use of AI

At Sanoma Learning, AI is thoughtfully integrated into educational solutions to save teachers’ time and improve learning outcomes through meaningful personalisation, always keeping teachers at the centre of the classroom experience. This approach ensures that technology enhances, rather than replaces, human guidance and maintains trust, compliance, and transparency by design.

Sustainable finance: Sanoma’s Social Bond Report published

Sanoma published its Social Bond Report in 2025 summarising the use and allocation of the proceeds of its EUR 150 million social bond issued in September 2024. The funds Sanoma raises through the issuance of social bonds are used to finance or refinance expenditures aimed at improving access to essential education services and to contribute to the UN SDGs, especially Goal 4 Quality Education.

Sanoma’s sustainability work is guided by its Sustainability strategy, which focuses on six topics: inclusive learning, sustainable media, trustworthy data, valued people, vital environment, and responsible business practices. Our performance is summarised in Sanoma’s sustainability scorecard. Sanoma’s Sustainability Statement 2025 further elaborates on the key priorities and progress. It is prepared in accordance with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), referred to in the Finnish Accounting Act, and the EU Taxonomy Regulation. PwC has performed a limited assurance engagement on the Sustainability Statement in compliance with the ISAE 3000 (Revised). In addition, Sanoma publishes a SASB content index.
