Sanoma Corporation, Stock Exchange Release, 3 September 2013 at 11:00 CET+1

Kaius Niemi, 39, has been appointed Senior Editor-in-Chief of the Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat as of 15 September 2013. At present Kaius Niemi works as Editor-in-Chief of Ilta-Sanomat and Taloussanomat. He has worked at Helsingin Sanomat for 12 years, both as a journalist and as part of the management.

“The recruitment process was thorough – we have explored all alternatives, internally as well as externally. It was great to see that the best capabilities needed for leading a journalistic organisation were to be found within Sanoma. One of the most important selection criteria was Kaius’s proven digital experience. Finland’s number one digital medium Ilta-Sanomat as well as the purely digital, profitable financial medium Taloussanomat are amazing success stories in the very challenging and quickly developing media industry,” Sanoma’s President and CEO Harri-Pekka Kaukonen comments.

Riikka Venäläinen, the acting Senior Editor-in-Chief, will continue as Editor-in-Chief and work side by side with Kaius Niemi.

“To quickly develop Helsingin Sanomat in all channels is a challenging, unique opportunity. We have a top team, great journalistic capabilities, an exceptional reach, a close relationship with our readers and a good understanding of the future of media consumption – all assets needed for success are in place,” Kaius Niemi comments.
